Man hit by car, severely injured while using Kirkland crosswalk

KIRKLAND, Wash. – A man suffered severe injuries Monday when he was struck by a car while using a crosswalk in a Kirkland neighborhood, police said.

Officers and medics responded to the scene, at 119th Place NE and NE 144th Street, at about 3:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a pedestrian being hit by a car, said Lt. John Haslip of the Kirkland police.

A preliminary investigation found that the man, in his 40s, was crossing 119th Place NE in the crosswalk when he was struck by a Toyota Prius driven by a woman in her 50s.

The woman, who was the only person in the car, told police she was making a left turn onto 119th Place from 144th Street and did not see the man in the crosswalk.

The victim was treated at the scene for severe head injuries and then taken to Harborview Medical Center. His injuries appeared to be life-threatening, Haslip said.

Police continue to investigate the accident, and the driver has been cooperative in the investigation, Haslip said, adding that alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
